THE NOMAD NOTEBOOK · GUIDE 02 / 03

5K, 10K or 20K?
Finding your reserve.

Understanding 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 mAh batteries, comparing their energy in Wh and estimating recharges according to your uses.

THE OBJECTS OF THE GUIDE

The reserve takes shape.

Two ways to carry 10K, and a 20K for days that run long.

02 / KEEPING A RESERVE

Battery life,
at your own pace.

mAh speak of capacity.
They do not say how fast you recharge.

5,000 mAh≈ 18.5 What 3.7 V nominal

5K

POCKET · MINI SLING

The little backup.

To finish the day, find your way or extend a walk. The format you really keep on you.

≈ ½ to 1 phone recharge*

10,000 mAh≈ 37 What 3.7 V nominal

10K

SLING · EVERYDAY BAG

The happy medium.

A reserve for the phone and small accessories. A good starting point for a day far from sockets.

≈ 1 to 2 phone recharges*

20,000 mAh≈ 74 What 3.7 V nominal

20K

BACKPACK · TRAVEL

Seeing a little further.

For long days, journeys and several devices. A computer is conceivable if the USB-C output is powerful enough.

≈ 2 to 4 phone recharges*

* Orders of magnitude wired for a 4,000 to 5,000 mAh phone. The cell voltage, losses, the battery's state and the phone's use change the result. Wireless generally reduces the useful reserve.

THE MARKER TO READ: Wh

Comparing energy, not just mAh.

Wh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × nominal voltage. A 10K battery at 3.7 V thus stores 37 Wh, before losses. Read the value in Wh printed on the product: the nominal voltage can vary.

AN EXAMPLE, NOT A PROMISE

37 Wh × 70 % ÷ 19 Wh ≈ 1,4

With an assumed overall efficiency of 70% and a 19 Wh phone, we get about 1.4 recharges. Simply dividing the mAh by each other forgets these differences.

NOTE 02

A 20K is not necessarily made for a computer.

It can have a lot of reserve and an output limited to 20 W. For a laptop, you need both enough energy in Wh and a suitable USB-C PD output in watts. The input indicates the speed at which the battery itself can recharge.

Explore power

CAPACITY + POWER · 24,000 mAh / 140 W

Anker · 737 Power Bank

The 737 combines a 24K reserve with stated power up to 140 W. Two figures to read separately: one speaks of stored energy, the other of the charging ceiling. The laptop and the cable must also be compatible.
